Clearly Not a Lot Going On

  • Today I attended a diversity class in godforsaken Utica. In attendance were a couple of the most bigoted people I've ever come in brief contact with. One girl said that we should hire (insert an ethnic minority class here; I can't bring myself to be specific), even though they "probably wouldn't have 4.0 GPA's or anything." She made two other comments during the session, and I remember thinking this one was the least ignorant of the three.
  • Yesterday I participated in an interview at work, during which the interviewee grabbed my boss's business card and started scribbling notes on it. I was horrified, although I couldn't identify why. At the end of the interview I went to give the interviewee my business card, and as I did it I carefully held the card out with my thumbs in each corner and started to bow. You can take the girl out of Japan . . .
  • It's 9:30 at night and 73* right now. It got up to 85* today. My upstairs is stuffy and gross. I hate being hot.
  • I got a massage tonight from a new massage therapist. She's kind of terrible. Even a bad massage is still pretty great, isn't it?

  1. That's odd--notes on the back of a business card? Isn't that a professional faux pas?

As for a bad massage, I've only had one. Whether it was good or bad, I couldn't tell you, but it felt awfully damn good to me!

  2. Yes, massages are like pizza and sex. Even when they're bad, they're still pretty good.

  4. Well. We certainly don't put up with comments like that down here in Louisiana.

It's a good thing that woman is no longer racist, though. You know, having attended a diversity class and all.

  5. Gosh, so you weren't impressed with Utica? Did I ever tell you my Utica story? My friend David was driving thru Utica last year when his appendix burst. The NiMo guy saw his car at the side of the road, stopped, and helped him to the hospital, where he had surgery and recuperated for a few days. Yeah, Utica is the BOMB.

  6. Even though I'm not American, I'm guessing Dave is joking. LOL

I can tell you why I would of been horrified. It is inappropriate and plain ol' stupid. What type of notes do you think she needed to write in the middle of an interview.

Remember to take out trash and feed neighbours cat!

  7. My theory has always been that diversity training courses were counter-productive because it allows the bigots to identify other bigots and band together. On the other hand, it's a form of self-segregation that actually benefits people -- they can vent to each other and spare us the crap.

  8. Scribbling on a business card is very bad form. Here is my identity, feel free to use it as your note pad.

  10. Diversity classes are the best. Racists feel safe and say things they wouldn't ordinarily say. Ironic huh? You should see my law school. I didn't know racism was so overt. The South is ridiculous. I mean, it's not like I have a 4.0 or anything but I did get into law school. Hopefully I'll be able to get a job someday..you know...being that my 'ingles' is so poor and everything. What a joke.

I love your blog. It's random. Randomness is truth.

  11. I'm so flattered you made my Mac and Cheese! I hope it went over well with your sister and BIL! Let me know.

  12. Hey, Michael! My sister and BIL LOVED it, and I ended up leaving enough at their house that they could have it again the next night. It was definitely a hit! Thanks :)
