Life

I just took my Ambien, so I figure I have twenty minutes before my forehead hits the keyboard, and about two hours and twenty minutes before I start ordering Chinese and driving around town in my underwear.

I've had such a full week and you won't hardly believe what has happened. My little brother and SIL had a baby, and I am now an Auntie. I'm certain that nothing like this has ever happened in the history of the world, and I'm just not sure I'll be able to explain what it feels like. My nephew is soft as a bunny and smells like heaven on earth. His toes are miniature Jelly Belly jelly beans all squished together, and his eyelashes are tiny little secrets. His eyes are soft, deep grey, and his nose is a smaller version of what I see in the mirror everyday. I flew to Seattle on Friday for a whirlwind, exhausting two-and-a-half days of kissing his wiggly neck and whispering liberal ideology into his tiny, perfect ears. I got back last night at midnight, cat in tow (that's a whole 'nother post), and really, who knew you could cry for ten hours straight? I hope I won't die if I have to go months without hearing his tiny sneezes or holding his body close enough to feel his heartbeat.

  5. Agreed - one of the most perfect descriptions of a baby I've ever read. "His eyelashes are tiny little secrets". Wow. That's sum good writin' there, kid.

I remember when my nephew was born, and visiting my brother and his wife (for his college graduation - yep). I couldn't get enough of the little guy. Even at the airport waiting to board the plane - back in the days when people could come to the gate with you to see you off, or to meet you (something I mourn having lost), I insisted on holding him and feeding him one last time before I flew back to Indiana. He was so small, and so beautiful, and so trusting.

Now I want a baby too. I wish I could actually follow through on that and give a child a good life. Everyone who has a baby should love them as much.

  11. how lovely. you've so perfectly described the wonder of a baby. i know you are flat out in love. and whispering liberal ideology into his tiny, perfect ears . . . and good for you, honey. indoctrinate this child to the right way before this crazy world gets hold of him.

i had a little niece 15 years ago who i got to hold one time. she spent an evening sleeping on my chest, my arms around her, her head beneath my chin. i can still feel her warmth right there in the center of my chest, right over my heart. i will never forget that.

  12. PICS PICS WHERE ARE THE PICS ??? Of the baby ? I love the way new borns smell. Did you have to take the cat cuz of the wifes tale of cat's smothering infants ?? oh yeah and be careful with those ambiens ...no cooking full breakfasts in you sleep ok? Or for that matter driving to your local diner either .

  14. The whispering of liberal ideology is a must at that age. Congratulations! Ambien? Try lunesta. A little aftertaste but much better. At least for me :).

  16. LMAO at that ambien (Chinese & underwear-driving) comment. Hi-freakin-larious!

YAY! Congratulations, Auntie! I'm not reading symptoms of a baby-bug, am I?? ;) They're so precious, aren't they?? Especially when you don't have to be the one to wake up with them in the middle of the night! (HeeHee)
