A Little Break

Today I left work for an hour in the afternoon and went across the street to Starbucks. There's no reason to go into how NY doesn't get the whole coffee-culture/Starbucks thing, so I'll just say that this Starbucks is fairly new and kind of remote and isn't busy very often. I don't drink coffee, but I like Starbucks because of what it meant to me in Japan - a small taste of the States. (When I was willing to drive 1 1/2 hours to Hiroshima for it, which, sadly, was pretty often.) So today I got a treat and some water and sat outside alone. I pulled my jeans up to my knees - Jeans Day! Aren't I a poor son-of-a-bitch for getting excited about wearing jeans? - and rolled my shirt sleeves up to my shoulders and kicked my feet up, Birkenstocks off, onto another chair. I brought some reading with me ("Managing Through Change" - riveting) but never really got to it. I put my head back so the sun was directly on my face and felt 10,000 miles away from yellow highlighters and attendance reports and PowerPoint presentations.

  4. Come the Revolution, the people responsible for creating Powerpoint will be lined up and shot, and there will be salsa-dancing in the streets.

  7. Wow. I've been reading "Managing Through Change", too.

What a great escape. It's sunny and 85 here for the rest of the week - I think I'll take the same break.

  8. When I moved to Portland ( after the break up with 7 year man) I used to spens alot of time in the starbucks (and coffee people) in all of down town portland. It is great to just get away and go 10,000 miles from where you really need to be. I am glad you took some YOU time and reveled in it. Now take some time and do it more often. 8)
