If You Tell a Lie Enough Times

I finally watched the documentary "For the Bible Tells Me So" tonight. It's just as scary and sad as I thought it would be. I'm very glad it mentioned crazy Christer James Dob.son, and many other popular fundamentalists. For as long as the doctrine is hate, I'll never step foot in a church again.

  1. I've been meaning to see this....it premiered here in Portland long ago. But we just haven't made time yet. Brought tears to my eyes just watching the trailer. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Yeah, I've been meant to watch this as well. I heard about it when I was doing my pilgrimage... I should really try to find a copy of it.

I also found out about another movie just last week, called Zeitgeist. The first 1/3 of the movie talked about the bible, and I thought it was an interesting view of it. My friend and I are planning a movie night just to watch this and have discussion afterwards. Check it out if you are interested:

  3. I saw this at my church. So fabulous. About half of my congregation is queer, so there was lots of chatting and laughter. I actually found it heartwarming, because it didn't just focus on the haters, it also highlighted the churches that are open and affirming and the REALITY of what the bible says about homosexuality.

Which leads me to ask--why is the doctrine of hate that belongs to a few denominations causing you to not step foot in any church? UCC, DOC, MCC, Methodist, Episcopalian, Unitarian, Unity, Religious Science, Lutheran--those are all the denominations I know of that have open and affirming congregations. Hate isn't the doctrine for us all. I realize it hurts and is louder, but each time we say a blanket statement that affirms the Dobson's are the "norm" or the total of the religion, we negate the reality that those jackasses are only a fraction of the whole picture, and there are millions of religious folk fighting for equality on all fronts. Why give the fucktards more fuel for their lunatic fires?

  4. I would have to agree with Demandra's points... lumping everyone together like that is so unfair, and beneath you... you're so much more loving and open minded and forgiving then they are... Being on the opposite side of the same coin still makes you worth the same amount....

Even many of us who don't embrace or agree morally with others life style choices don't at all have hateful feelings about it... It's hard to take the higher ground... but you can't negate stereotyping and labeling, by labeling and stereotyping....

But i would agree with you in that.... as long as the doctrine in any church is hate, you shouldn't step foot into that church...

But remember there are ugly people everywhere...
