32 Years

Via JMG - this man, like thousands of others, was denied Social Security benefits upon the death of his partner of 32 years. Those benefits would have been granted to any straight spouse that had been married ten minutes. Even if it was ten minutes into a fifth marriage to someone they barely knew after having serial affairs that ended the first four marriages. It doesn't matter - they would just have to be straight.

In my opinion, equal rights for our LGBT brothers and sisters is the most urgent current civil rights issue.

  1. Oh dear, I think I've become institutionalised by Facebook. After reading your post and watching the short film I immediately looked for a "Like" link I could click.

I've been keeping up to date with the wins and losses over Marriage Equality in the US for the last couple of years now and I'm optimistic. I think it's getting to the point where it's going to happen, either because it becomes a no-brainer for the majority or because the Government/Courts decide that they need to legislate to protect a minority that is being unconstitutionally deprived of rights. That's already happening in California, it seems.

But what does this crazy Limey know, anyway?

Thanks for adding your hand to the push. If they ever bring in Marriage Equality for overseas spouses, I'll be looking for a nice upstanding Oregonian to take me on ;)

  2. It's one of many, many messes in this world -- thanks for remembering those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

  3. This is heartbreaking, and terrifying. I know that if either of us were to die, neither Scott nor I could keep our house that we've lived in together for 13 years. Which would also mean we couldn't keep our beloved pets. The thought that it could happen tomorrow - tonight - keeps me awake sometimes.

Thanks for always being so very, very much on our side. Which is, as you prove, ALL of ours side.

I'm going to go make sure I know where our domestic partnership info is and make sure our life insurance is up to date. And pray that neither of our families would contest them. God, this sucks. LSL, maybe you and I should get married. I know you'd make sure Scott was taken care of.
