There's Magic in the Night

(Not exactly the most important thing going on in my life, but I just wanna get some of this shit down.)

I'm a concert-going girl. I love live music, not your live music, but my live music - the kind I like. Love it enough that I'll see artists I might not be a huge fan of if I have a feeling their live show might be something special.

I went to my first Bruce Springsteen concert a couple weeks ago, and all I gotta say is: Wow. Double wow. Jesus H. tap-dancing Christ, wow. THAT was a good show. I mean, I've always enjoyed a few Bruce songs but I've never really gotten the whole Bruce thing. I swear, it didn't take 2 minutes to figure out the whole Bruce thing once the show started. I've seen a lot of shows and this was hands down, no argument, nothing even close, the best show I've ever been to. Not to mention that he played 4.5 hours without so much as a bathroom break (meanwhile, I took three). No kidding.

I don't know. The arena was full, so that means that even with 20,000 people in there it still felt like a very intimate performance. He really does strike you as the hardest working person in the business. And there's something very tangibly Americana, blue collar, "he's one of us" about him and his performance . . . and I know it's dorky as shit, but listening to the lyrics and the stories behind the songs, you feel proud to be an American and proud that he is one, too. I know, I know. And you maybe even feel yourself regain a tiny, tiny slice of the dignity that GWB and the previous Administration prostituted to big business and foreign oil for 8 years during that period when I lived overseas and America was almost unilaterally hated around the globe. Big stuff, but I'm telling you, I felt it all. And more. Not bad for a rock concert.

Here are two of my favorites.

Here's a write up on Bruce's website about his Portland show - very awesome.

P.S. Clarence Clemons' nephew plays sax with the E Street Band now, and he kills it. How awesome is that? So awesome.

  1. I love that you went to his show. I was surprised when I saw you were at it because it doesn't seem like the music you're into but reading this, it makes perfect sense.

  2. He has got to be one of the greatest performers around. Some years ago, he played here in, like, the Superdome, or something, played for 3 to 4 hours. Then he and the band went to a club in the French Quarter and played some more until the sun came up! And DIDN'T charge!!!
