Spring Forward

I hate to think that my emotional equilibrium hinges on one hour, but the change to daylight saving time really f-ed me up. I felt absolutely groggy and grouchy all morning. I don't usually take lunches at work, but today I left and headed to church* and spent over an hour browsing, running my fingers along the inviting covers, and getting lost in the possibilities. I ended up with a stack of new books (below) and had time left over to sit down at the cafe and start one. I helped myself to something wicked called Chocolate Chocolate Blackout Cake, and sat there contemplating life and making yummy noises. I also contemplated what the hell the other twenty or so people were doing in the cafe. Do these people have jobs? Who knew that so much happens in the world at 11:00 on a Monday.

The indulgence: Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris, The Motorcycle Diaries by Che Guevara, Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, and Beautiful Boy by David Sheff.

  1. I am soooo glad that I am not the only one who has not read The Kite Runner yet. It is on my list but just haven't been feelin' it yet. Isn't it amazing what a small amount of time in a book store can do for your spirirts? Oh and about the people in the cafe ...they may well have worked in the hospitality field we are strange birds with even stranger hours!! Let me knowif The Kite runner is worth it . :)

  2. oh yeah and P.S. It may be hard to adjust to sringing forward and falling back , but it is even weirder to deal with it for most of your life, and then move to a place that doesn't even acknowledge them. But I guess you know that already having lived in Japan.

  3. I like that: "church." I've found this time change thoroughly disagreeable too, I think I'll head down to "Church of Powell's" tomorrow for some indulgence of my own.

Thanks for the idea! (As if I ever need another excuse to go to Powell's. I swear it was a great conspiracy when they moved the Beaverton location across the street from my office!)

  7. Kite Runner is a good read...Motorcycle Diaries, not so much. It may be because I don't personally like Che Guevara though.

  8. i think that a lot of people you see in cafes during the day are people who work in off hours or can work remotely on their computers. sometimes i wish i had a job like that, but then i crave continuity and would prefer sometimes to just go to the office as opposed to be on a 'free' schedule.

i like to also run my fingers on the books and like you, it's 'church' to me. i love love love bookstores. all the potential makes my mind boggle. the thrill of finding a great book or author is something that i am always looking for...

  9. Just offering my 2-cents on the Kite Runner. I've listened to it on CD twice (great for road trips - lemme know if you ever want to borrow it!) and just really appreciate where it takes me. I appreciate what comes up for me in terms of cultural awareness and sensitivity and such.

Have I ever recommended Serving Crazy with Curry? LOVE it!!
